There’s not much more to say about Harry Potter, the world-famous children’s book series that expanded into a universe of its own.
From the beginning, there was something magical about the world of wizards J.K. Rowling created. With its own towns, governance, school system, and economy, the Harry Potter universe offered a place that could only exist in dreams.
Things only picked up further steam when Warner Brothers released the first of the Harry Potter movie series, starring none other than Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. They took on the iconic Harry Potter names of Harry, Ron and Hermoine, and became immortalized.
They were joined by a host of talent, including veterans like Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith: huge names in the UK theatre and film industries.
From there, it was only a matter of time before the Harry Potter universe became a smash hit amongst people of all ages. Suddenly, they were drawing in collaborations, spin-offs, and experiences such as the Warner Brothers Studio Tour in London, or the upcoming Harry Potter World in the United States.
And the hype continues to build. Warner Brothers and J.K. Rowling are pressing forward with their Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series. It’s a spin-off/prequel to the first series of movies, the latest of which premiered last year.
The Importance of Names in Harry Potter
Part of the magic of the Harry Potter world is built into the names.
Take, for instance, the central antagonist of the series: Voldemort. Part of the menace and terror he commands lies in his name – which leads characters to refer to him as He-who-shall-not-be-named.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter himself sees power in his name, and his story as the Boy who Lived. The many people he meets in the Wizarding World quickly take to him, and offer him assistance in his journey.
Names communicate subtleties in this universe. Like we often say: people’s stories are inscribed in the things they call themselves.
It’s why Tom Riddle changed his name, to tell a new, terrible story; why Severus Snape masked his identity. It’s why the Weasleys are so close and loving, and why the Dursleys seem so downright dismal.
